Resumes for a Career Change

A better resume will certainly help you if you are looking to change careers.  However, it’s my experience that changing careers is pretty difficult right now.  In today’s market, companies are under intense pressure to perform.  Bringing someone from outside may offer fresh perspectives but there will still be a steep learning curve.

Recently, several people have expressed interest in moving from consulting to a fulltime role within a company.  And they are finding it’s more difficult to land a new role than they thought.  A move away from consulting can be a radical change if the consultant was brought in for specific expertise and advice.  The skills needed to succeed as a member of the team are often very different than the skills needed as a ‘hired gun.’

My advice–  find colleagues, friends, family that can make introductions and connections for you in the new career.  By having a connection, the hiring team will feel the risk is minimized to some degree.
